Raised in a family of subsistence farmers, his father, a forestry officer, emphasized education as the way out of poverty. As Dr. Omon puts it, “[education] was the only way out of the ghetto.” Today, Dr. Omon is a Professor of Mushroom Biology and Fungal Biotechnology at North Carolina A&T State University and one of the world’s leading mycologists, with over 124 peer-reviewed publications. He also gives back to his community, teaching single mothers in Ghana to grow and sell mushrooms to fund their children’s education.
